why not just make it public. the chances of anyone getting the ip without having it directly told to them a 1 in a million, and its much easier than making a whitelist

Because if I did that and some griefing user wants to get on the server, they could and they could harm it.

The chances of that are very minimal. What kinds of griefers would be able to get on from looking on a single website that isn't extremely well known. If you're really that afraid you could keep a backup as well, and core protect is good no matter what.

Well the thing is, say that a new user gets in and yes it can happen, and I don't mean people out of the sight. I mean griefers who make a Zelda Craft Forum account. Plus, I don't want griefing right now. But I will Whitelist you, vay.

And yet, they still can happen. I don't want random players on the server while we're building. It's safer this way to rid hackers as well.

Hey guys! I think by the title you can guess what's going on- I'm (Me, my brother, and my dad) making a Harry Potter Based MineCraft server! It will be Whitelist right now and will be published in maybe a month or less, I'll say. If you'd like to be whitelisted, please post in the comments. I will now tell you what is planned:
1. Rules:
No swearing, period.
No asking for staff, use website to apply.
No spamming, immediate jail and mute.
No using power against new players.
No excessive raiding.
Griefing in certain worlds.
2. Magic!
Yes, there'll be magic. Here are some basic, first year spells:
Stupefy: Deals 1/2 heart to opponent, and makes 2 second slowness 1.
Reducto: Deals 1 heart of damage, exploding target. Breaks Protego.
Pertrificus Totalus: Makes Slowness to target for 10 seconds.
Bombarda: Drops only damaging TNT on opponent, no block break.
Protego: Shields you from all spells for 10 seconds, 20 second cooldown.
Flipendo: Launches target into the air 10 blocks high.
Incendio: Catches target on fire for 5 seconds.
3. Ranks!
Okay, ranks go from least to greatest.
Noob: Access to: /help, /kit noob, /spawn, /playtime, /warps, /tpa, /tpahere, /tpaccept, /tpdeny, /worth, and /sell. Get for being on server first time.
Squib: Access to: All of Noob, /wand, "casting abilities", spells: Flipendo, Stupefy, Reducto. Get's /warp Hogwarts. Get for staying on for 5 minutes
1st Year: Access to all of Noob and Squib, can get sorted, can warp to /warp sorcerersstone, new spells: Incendio, Protego, Bombarda. Access to common rooms. Get for being on 10 minutes total.
2nd Year: Access to: All of Noob, Squib, 1st Year. Can do /warp chamberofsecrets, /warp Quidditch. New spells: Pertrificus Totalus. Can now fly brooms and play quidditch (Paintball on brooms, for now) Get for staying on 20 minutes.
3rd Year: Access to: All of Noob, Squib, 1st Year, 2nd Year. Can do /warp Azkaban, /warp Shriekingshack, /warp Hogsmeade. New spells: Expelliarmus, powerful spell that makes target drop there hand. Very annoying. Access to /faction. Get for staying on for 40 minutes.
4th Year: Access to: All of Noob, Squib, 1st Year, 2nd Year, 3rd Year. Access to TriWizard Tournament. New spells: Accio, which brings opponent towards you, Depulso, which makes your foe get knocked back, and, for now, Firework, which makes a firework go in the air. Get for staying on 80 minutes.
5th Year: Access to: Own dorm in common rooms! New spells: Confrendo, which makes a ghast fireball fly at wherever cursor is, then explodes in flames. 5 second cooldown. Access to /warp DA. Get for being on for 160 minutes.
6th Year: Access to: /warp potions, /warp hagrid, /warp transfiguration, /warp DumbleDoresoffice, /warp Astronomytower, /warp ThreeBroomsticks, /warp aragog, /warp wild. New Spells: Sectumsempra, does 4 hearts of damage to target player. VERY POWERFUL. Get for staying on 320 minutes.
7th Year: Access to: /warp hogwartsattack, /warp horcruxchallenge. New spell: Avadakedavra, which INSTANTLY KILLS OPPONENT. 120 second cooldown. Get for staying on for 640 minutes!
Wizard: Access to: /warp diagonally, /warp ministry, /warp burrow, /warp Deatheater, /warp Auror. Access to /warp diamonds. Best warp, gives free diamonds for being on server for so long. New Spells! Levicorpus: Makes opponent get launched 100 blocks high. Jelly Legs Jinx: Makes opponent go in different directions, dealing fall damage. Get for staying on for: 2,560 minutes.
4. Donate
Donations are cheap and very good for PvP and other various reasons.
PolyJuicePotion, $10. Ability to use /d (player name). Very Powerful. Recommended while raiding.
Apparation, $5. Ability to teleport wherever cursor points. Basically /jump command.
Animagi, $10. Ability to use /d, but instead of players, animals. Can be: Wolf, Ocelot, Squid, Silverfish, Sheep, Zombie, Giant, Slime, Pig, Cow, Chicken.
5. Staff
The staff application list is here, and rules to being one.
1. Have a good understanding of all commands.
2. Be kind to other players. (But that doesn't mean you can't tp to them and troll them. )
3. Make sure you don't pick on certain players, it isn't nice.
4. Finally, you can't have been banned 5 times. If it was unnecessary, I can take it off your "record."
5. Oh, and just to let you know, if a user hasn't been on for at east two months, or is perm banned, you may grief there creations.
6. How many staff positions?
Well, there of 10 of each position, going least power to greatest.
Moderator,
HeadModerator,
Admin,
HeadAdmin.
Some staff, however, are just to be part of Role Play of the server, which is very good to get new members!
These staff:
Professor,- 10 positions.
Dark Lord,- One Position.
Harry Potter.- One Position.
7. Unfair Moderator!
Just go on our website and tell us. We use a "Court System" if you complain over a moderator or higher of any position.

And crap... our terminal computer is malfunctioning, and since we're leaving to the Grand Canyon next week, I may not be able to work it... may be a delay of 3-4 more weeks, sorry!

We don't really know. It's having a problem with the terminal, my dad works with Linux all day, so he's an expert with computers.

That's good. Linux is by far the best os for running a server. Hopefully it can be fixed soon
