Zelda Characters - Princess Zelda

Princess Zelda is involved in all the Zelda games, and is often central to the quest and plot. The exception to this is in Link's Awakening, and to an extent Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. In Link's Awakening, Princess Zelda is mentioned but she does not make an appearance, and neither is she involved in any other way with the game. In most of the games though, Zelda is kidnapped by Ganon, and it is up to Link to save her. Shigero Miyamoto has stated that Princess Zelda's name was inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of American author Scott Fitzgerald.

Attacks and Abilities
Zelda does not fight much, though she possesses magical abilities as well as some physical attacks. Her magical powers are particularly mysterious - in A Link to the Past, she is able to telepathically communicate with Link, whilst in Ocarina of Time she can sense the emergeance of evil, namely Ganondorf, through terrible dreams. Princess Zelda is also skilled with a bow and arrow. In both The Wind Waker and in Twilight Princess, she helps Link to defeat Ganon by firing light arrows, very powerful arrows that have been infused with sacred light.

Zelda in Disguise
As mentioned earlier, Princess Zelda is typically kidnapped by Ganon, though Nintendo has used her character in many interesting ways. In Ocarina of Time, she takes on the disguise of a mysterious character named Shiek. Unbeknownst to be Zelda by Link, Shiek helps out Link in many parts of the game, particularly in teaching him useful ocarina songs that allow the player to travel through Hyrule more quickly. In the end, Shiek finally reveals herself as the Princess Zelda. In order to hide herself effectively from Ganon, she decided to disguise herself as Shiek. In the Wind Waker, the character Tetra is another example of Zelda in disguise. This time, however, Tetra is oblivious of her identity of being the reincarnation of Princess Zelda. The fact that Tetra is a reincarnation of Zelda is perhaps hinted by her personality - whereas the Princess Zelda is a rather graceful and sincere character, Tetra is more stubborn, and quite brash.

Cameo and Video Game Appearances
Princess Zelda has also made appearances in many other games, particularly in the Super Smash Brothers games. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Zelda is a small character who possesses the ability to switch forms between herself and Shiek. Whereas her normal form uses spell casts, Shiek has an array of very strong physical attacks. Princess Zelda also makes an appearance in the Legend of Zelda cartoon series. Her personality is quite different from her video game counterparts - she is quite stubborn and sometimes even quite rude towards Link, who duly responds with the infamous line, 'Well excuuuuse me, Princess.'
